Former Ghanaian First Lady, Theresa Kufuor, Passes Away at 87

Theresa Kufuor, the beloved wife of former President John Agyekum Kufuor, peacefully passed away at her residence in Peduase on Sunday, October 1, at the age of 87, surrounded by her family.

President Nana Akufo-Addo expressed his condolences and visited the former President's home to offer his support.

Born on October 25, 1935, Theresa Kufuor was not only the wife of the second President of Ghana's Fourth Republic but also served as the country's former First Lady. She had a distinguished career as a retired nurse and midwife.

Mrs. Kufuor began her educational journey at the Catholic Convent, OLA, in Keta, Volta Region, Ghana. Later, she pursued nursing studies in London, becoming a Registered General Nurse in the Southern Hospital Group of Nursing, Edinburgh, Scotland. Further studies at the Radcliffe Infirmary in Oxford and Paddington General Hospital in London earned her the title of State Certified Midwife, along with a Certificate in Premature Nursing.

Her marriage to John Kufuor, which took place in 1962 when he was 23, was the result of a serendipitous encounter at a Republic Day Anniversary Dance in London in 1961. Blessed with five children and eight grandchildren, Theresa Kufuor was a devout Roman Catholic and, despite her role as First Lady from 2001 to 2009, she remained relatively discreet in the political arena.

In 2007, she advocated for policy revisions in the Government's white paper on Educational Reforms to support the implementation of UNESCO's Free Compulsory Universal Basic Education (FCUBE) program for kindergarten children.

She also founded the Mother and Child Community Development Foundation (MCCDF), a non-governmental organization with operations in Ghana and Canada. MCCDF is dedicated to preventing mother-to-child transmission and supporting various community development initiatives.
