GES Ranks For Teachers And Their Corresponding Salaries

This article provides comprehensive information on the salary ranks and payment structure for teachers in the Ghana Education Service (GES), as well as the factors affecting their earnings, including promotions.

In Ghana, teachers are widely recognized for their valuable contributions, yet their monthly earnings are often considered insufficient. Despite the challenging nature of the profession, teachers enjoy a certain degree of attractiveness in terms of their salaries.

Ranking

Teachers' salaries in the GES are determined by several factors, including their level of experience, rank within the service, and the duties they perform. The following is a list of the ranks within the GES:

1. Pupil Teacher.

2. Superintendent II.

3. Superintendent I.

4. Senior Superintendent II.

5. Senior Superintendent I.

6. Principal Superintendent.

7. Assistant Director II.

8. Assistant Director I.

9. Deputy Director.

10. Director II.

11. Director I.

12. Deputy Director General.

13. Director General.

Changes in Requirements

Over time, the GES has been evolving its entry requirements for teachers, gradually moving away from accepting diplomas as the basic qualification for teaching in primary schools. Instead, they have established mechanisms to help diploma holders upgrade their qualifications to become degree-holding teachers, thereby placing them at the rank of Principal Superintendent.

Salary Payment Structure

Teachers' salaries in the GES are determined using the Single Spine Salary Structure (SSSS), which comprises two main components: Levels and Points.

Levels

Teachers with similar job portfolios are placed in the same salary level. The levels range from one (1) for those with the least work job description to twenty-five (25) for the Director-General, who holds the highest rank within the service.

Points

Points represent the number of years a staff member has been at a particular rank. Staff members must qualify for promotion to the next level once they have exhausted all available points at their current level.

Salary Highlights

Below are some salary highlights for teachers in Ghana:

- Newly posted diploma teachers start at level 14.1 (PSH14.1) with a corresponding salary structure.

- Newly recruited degree holders start at level 16.1 (PSH16.1) with a specific salary structure.

- The Director-General (PSH25.1) has the highest salary scale within the GES.

Other Important Points

- Headmasters and headmistresses are placed at the Deputy-Director rank (level 20.1) due to their additional responsibilities.

- The service no longer employs individuals with certificates below diplomas.

- Teachers below the rank of Principal Superintendent should refer to the next salary level after their current one after a promotion.

- Teachers on the Principal Superintendent (PS) rank with extra responsibilities should calculate and add 1.7% of the PSH18.1 scale to their salary.

- Teachers promoted from Assistant Director II (AD II) to Assistant Director I (AD I) may be placed at either PSH19.1 or PSL20.1.

- Teachers promoted from Assistant Director I (AD I) to Deputy Director rank may be placed at either PSH20.1 or PSL21.1.
