Ten communities in Eastern region receive $90,000 for projects

Advocates for Community Alternatives (ACA) has forged partnerships with the Abuakwa South Municipal and Fanteakwa South District Assemblies to support mining communities in Ghana. They aim to implement the Facilitated Collective Action Process (FCAP), a strategy originally developed and popularized in East Africa by ACA's partner organization, Spark MicroGrants.

The FCAP process aligns with ACA's community-driven development approach, empowering communities to formulate a shared development vision. ACA provides them with skills and financial resources, including a USD 9,000 microgrant, to pursue this vision.

Each community is granted $9,000 by ACA to undertake sustainable development projects. These initiatives enable communities, threatened by extractive development, to regain control over their development and advocate for their desired future.

In accordance with the District Assemblies' medium-term plans:

- Hemang, Dwenase, and Kplandey prioritize mechanized borehole construction.

- Dome focuses on establishing a CHPS Compound (mini clinic).

- Asikam urgently requires a maternity block and aims to upgrade its CHPS Compound to a health center.

- Nsutam seeks a mini market.

- Saamang and Ahwenease plan to construct classroom blocks.

- Abompe and Bosuso communities invest in income-generating ventures like poultry farming and soap production, respectively.

Gideon Ofori Boakye, the Assembly member for Asikam Electoral Area, expressed gratitude for ACA's guidance and emphasized the importance of the maternity block project for improved maternal healthcare access.

The Mmrateehene (chief of young males) of Asikam, Obed Ofori Ansah, praised ACA for their engagements with the community, which enhanced their understanding of planning and implementing community-based projects.

Previously, Sagyemase, Juaso, Nsuapemso (Eastern Region), Donkro Nkwanta, Kyeredeso, Nwoase, and Salamkrom (Bono East Region) benefited from the FCAP process. Through FCAP, these communities have successfully developed critical infrastructure and initiated collective enterprises.

ACA intends to replicate this process in a hundred Ghanaian mining communities in the coming years. The organization has also sponsored community-driven development projects in Guinea, Liberia, and Sierra Leone.
