Odwira: Tree planting and clean-up exercise slated for Sept. 28

The Paramount Chief of the Akuapem traditional area, His Majesty Oseadeeyo Kwasi Akuffo III, will preside over the Akuapem Odwira festival on September 28, 2023. Preceding this event, a tree planting and clean-up exercise are scheduled for Saturday, September 23, 2023, as part of the festival's social activities.


The theme for this year's Akuapem Odwira festival is 'Eco-Tourism for Sustainable Development.' The festival, which began on August 12, 2023, will continue until October 7, 2023.


Various social activities are planned to celebrate the occasion, including a Heritage Art Display on September 25th and 26th, a food festival on Thursday, September 28, and the Man Ghana and Odwira Concert on Friday, September 29, 2023.


Additional social activities include a health screening and walk, fontomfrom competition, NLA live draw, Thanksgiving service, Okuapehene soccer gala, Okuapehene invitational golf tournament, path clearing, outdooring of new yam, and ushering in Odwira. Traditional activities will also be an integral part of the festival.


The Akuapem Odwira Festival is observed by the people of Akropong-Akuapim, Aburi, Larteh, Kitase, and Mamfe in the Eastern Region of Ghana. It is celebrated during September and October in various Akwapim towns.


Originally, the festival marked the time for communal celebration following the yam harvest. While it has been inaccurately referred to as the Yam Festival, Odwira is a festival of Akan origin celebrating communal identity.


The festival is expected to draw numerous attendees, including indigenous people, government officials, politicians, members of the diplomatic corps, members of the diaspora, and Ghanaians at large, all gathering on the Akuapem Ridge to celebrate their rich culture through various events.

CETAG Opposes Proposal to Abolish Licensure Exams for Teacher Trainees
