OccupyJubileeHouse demo: Over 50 members arrested as group defies Police to protest

Despite police warnings, a gathering of protesters congregated at the 37 Trotro Station in Accra on Thursday, September 21, 2023, to participate in the OccupyJubilee House demonstration.

These demonstrators are advocating for various reforms, such as reducing the cost of living, combating corruption, and enhancing governance. Although the police had secured a court injunction against the protest, the protesters ignored the injunction and attempted to march towards Jubilee House, the official residence of Ghana's President.

In response, law enforcement authorities arrested several protesters, including some of the event's organizers. Approximately 50 individuals from the group are presently in custody at the regional police headquarters in Accra Central. The organizers argue that they never received any court notice, leading them to assemble at 37 on Thursday morning with the intention of marching to Jubilee House.

Security personnel, along with buses, were present at the gathering point to apprehend the demonstrators. Among the prominent arrests is Oliver Barker Vormawor, the #FixtheCountry convenor.

The OccupyJubilee House protest is the most recent in a series of demonstrations against the government. Over the past few months, there has been a growing public dissatisfaction with the escalating cost of living and the perceived failure of the government to address the people's concerns.

While the government maintains that it is taking all possible measures to enhance the lives of Ghanaians, protesters contend that these efforts are insufficient, insisting that the people of Ghana deserve better.
