Dampare is the worst IGP in Ghana’s history – COP Mensah

COP George Alex Mensah, one of the senior police officers implicated in the alleged plot to remove Inspector General of Police, Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, has once again asserted his view that the current IGP is the worst in Ghana's history. He reiterated this stance during his appearance before the parliamentary committee investigating the viral tape in which senior police officers are heard discussing the removal of the IGP with the former Northern Regional chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bugri Naabu.

"I can tell you that in my 31 years of service in the Police Force, this IGP is the worst IGP," COP Mensah stated before the committee on Friday, September 1. He added that he had previously informed the IGP about issues in the Police Service that were negatively affecting the morale of police officers, but his recommendations were consistently ignored.

On Thursday, COP Mensah had informed the committee that the IGP's leadership style had led to a decrease in morale among many police officers. "Dampare is not effectively managing the Police Service, and most police officers are dissatisfied. You can conduct your investigations. You can speak to the police officers undercover, and they will confirm it," COP Mensah declared.

Additionally, COP Mensah admitted to being involved in politics and working in the interest of the New Patriotic Party. These statements mirrored similar sentiments captured on the leaked tape, where he was heard telling Bugri Naabu that removing the IGP was necessary for the NPP to win the 2024 elections. However, COP Mensah strongly denied the tape's authenticity, claiming it had been tampered with and did not accurately represent the original conversation with Bugri Naabu. He also expressed his inability to verify several details on the tape.
