Coup: Nigerien Residents in Ashanti Region Call for French Troop Withdrawal

Hundreds of Nigerien nationals residing in the Ashanti Region have added their voices to the calls for the withdrawal of French troops from Niger, where military rulers currently hold power following a coup.

These nationals express their support for the recent coup in their homeland and urge the leadership of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to pursue diplomatic means that would allow the coup leaders to establish a new government to restore stability.

The Nigerien community argues that the ousted President, Mohammed Bazoum, failed to safeguard lives during years of turmoil caused by the incursion of jihadist groups into various parts of the country.

During their demonstration, these nationals displayed placards bearing messages demanding the immediate removal of French forces from Niger.

Speaking at a press conference in Kumasi, Abdul-Rahim Haruna, the spokesperson for the Nigerien Community in the Ashanti Region, emphasized that the presence of French troops in Niger is not contributing positively to the situation.

"Due to recent developments in our country, Niger, we, the Nigeriens living in Kumasi and in Ghana as a whole, are reaffirming our support for the new government, namely the military. We are demanding the immediate withdrawal of the French Army and the prosecution of members of the deposed government."

"With the suspension of any contract between the Republic of France and our dear country Niger, we are urging H.E General Abdourahmane Tchiani and his Prime Minister, Honourable Lamine Zeine, to look for new partners who can help us develop our country."
