Ada East: 95 HIV-positive cases recorded in first half of 2023

Mr. Adator Anani, the Coordinator of HIV Programmes for Ada East District, has reported that the district has recorded 95 cases of Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) positive individuals in the first half of 2023. These cases were identified through tests conducted on 678 individuals between January and June.

The district's annual target for HIV testing in 2023 is set at 1,309 people, with a projected 193 positive cases. In the first six months, 678 individuals were tested, surpassing the halfway mark.

In the previous year, the target was to test 1,345 individuals, with an expected 48 positive cases. However, the district exceeded expectations by testing 3,650 individuals, leading to the identification of 250 positive cases.

Regarding individuals receiving Anti-Retroviral Treatment (ART), Mr. Anani reported that 1,427 individuals started treatment in 2022, surpassing the target of 1,164. During the first half of 2023, 1,504 individuals were already on treatment, compared to the annual goal of 1,206. It's worth noting that some patients accessed ART services in Ada East facilities despite residing outside the district.

Despite the district's positive progress in HIV management, Mr. Anani stressed the need for continued efforts to achieve the national strategy's goals, known as the 95:95:95 agenda. This agenda aims for at least 95% of people with HIV to be aware of their status, 95% of those aware to receive treatment, and 95% of those on treatment to achieve viral suppression.

Viral suppression is crucial in reducing HIV transmission. Mr. Anani emphasized that strong treatment outcomes would significantly contribute to reducing new infections.
