Gabon president calls on ‘friends’ to ‘make noise’ over coup.

The president of Gabon has issued a call for "friends around the world" to raise awareness about the coup in Gabon, as shown in a video circulating on social media.

Seated in what he asserts is his residence, an opulent room adorned with wood-paneled walls, intricate carpets, and leather-bound books, Ali Bongo shares, "My son is somewhere, my wife is in another place. Nothing is happening. I don't know what is going on."

He reiterates his appeal to his "friends" to voice their concerns before expressing gratitude to them.

A communications firm that had been collaborating with the presidency during the elections has contacted the BBC to verify the authenticity of the video. The company has been requested by Bongo's office to circulate the video.

Significantly, Bongo addresses the audience in English. While French is the official language of Gabon—a former French colony that gained independence in 1960—Bongo's use of English in the video is noteworthy.
