Abstain from actions that might push Ghana into a coup - Fiifi Fiavi advises.

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has issued a caution to the government, urging them to refrain from actions that could lead the country into a coup. The recent takeover in Gabon adds to a series of coups that have occurred in the past few years, with the most recent instance being soldiers assuming control in Niger just a month ago.

Fiifi Fiavi Kwetey, the General Secretary of the NDC, stressed the underlying causes of coups and advised the government to be attentive to the needs of the citizens. Speaking to reporters in Accra, he stated, "Instead of nurturing a primitive fixation that compels those in power to manipulate institutions, dismantle opposition-supporting businesses, and create circumstances that hinder potential challengers, let the populace decide who should lead."

He further added, "Simultaneously, you ought to be cautious when intervening in other countries' coup situations while unknowingly fostering an environment that could lead to a similar crisis in your own nation."

Some coup attempts have cited governance deficiencies, unmet citizen expectations, and widespread disillusionment as factors behind their actions. In Gabon, thousands of citizens and residents took to the streets to celebrate the military coup that had transpired.

Earlier, reports from Sahara Reporters indicated that a group of Gabonese soldiers appeared on television, declaring an end to the existing regime and nullifying the results of an election that saw President Ali Bongo Ondimba as the winner according to official records. Videos depicted jubilant Gabonese citizens parading through the streets, expressing gratitude to their military for what they perceived as their liberation.

However, Gabon's president, in a video clip circulating on social media on August 30, urged international allies to take notice of the coup in Gabon. President Ali Bongo voiced uncertainty about the situation, saying, "My son is somewhere, my wife is in another place. Nothing is happening. I don’t know what is going on."
